that's my former housemate and completely awesome, beautiful woman, Tamara, in the bottom photo. she wrote a wonderful piece for the book. in her story, Long Live Negrita!, Tamara weaves together several memories. she recalls gleaning walnuts as a child in the orchard her grandfather managed, how some years ago, working with plants helped her recover from a terrible loss, and how more recently, she created a garden with the children at the public housing development library she manages in Hawaii.

Saudade by Anik See is a book of essays about travel, place-making, and consumption that I think could provide a sort of companion piece to From Orchards, Fields, and Gardens. It's also beautifully designed & put together.

What a lovely book. Pick me please!

I'm remembering the wonderfully sweet peas that my grandmother grew. My favorite treat was to follow her into the garden to eat the peas raw right out of the pod.

Favorite veggie is hard, because it depends! On the season and my mood. Right now I'm in a lacinato kale stage :)

Just finished 'Fingersmith', which I loved.

Congratulations on your book, Shash! I've been out of the loop (moved across the country to Vermont) and am so happy to have stumbled again on to your blog :)
